Listen in over the next several weeks as some of the current diakonia students chat about their experience with the guided, self-study program for Adult Faith formation.
Michele: Hi Diane. I know you live and worship in Winter Park and that you are a dog lover…. what prompted you to enroll in the diakonia program?
Diane: When Pastor Stan was on sabbatical, Pastor Trixie Richter and I were talking in the office. She had mentioned about this diakonia program; it sounded interesting. Over the next couple of days while I was working in the office, she made the program sound more and more interesting. Now I have not been in a church, Lutheran or any other denomination, in years. My husband was not religious. I had been baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran religion as a child but left when I turned 16. I left the church to experience life. Since my husband’s death I needed more in my life. So, I found Redeemer Lutheran Church and really liked the congregation and the pastor. So, I stayed and got really involved.
Michele: Is the study or work difficult?
Diane: For me the courses are hard because I have not been involved or done any continuing bible study. But I stuck with it and I’m glad I did. But on the other hand, the course has been unbelievably interesting. I have totally enjoyed learning and have made some great friends. There are papers to write, but what you learn is so awesome.
Michele: When we say the courses are guided – what does that mean?
Diane: We have coaches who are pastors. They really take their time and help to guide us in finding the answer. The courses are also online and are self-study so you can go at your own pace. Take a course, then take a break.
Michele: Are there other students in your class?
Diane: Yes. They are from all over the state of Florida and Pennsylvania, and now New York.
Michele: What would you say to someone who is considering trying out a course or two?
Diane: Go for it. I feel so blessed that I found this program and have not regretted my decision. After I graduate, I will be taking on extra courses. I feel the need to learn as much as I can. Eventually I would like to become a Parish Deacon, but that will have to wait for a while.
