Michele Hilton shares an endearing story about Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton.
I have to tell you….when “we” finish with our synod assemblies (3 days and 550 attendees) – I am totally exhausted. So, I totally expected that the churchwide staff in New Orleans for a full week, with almost 1,000 voting members at the Churchwide Assembly and maybe another couple hundred visitors and 300 or so for the Grace Gathering (whew! That’s a lot of people!) would be shell-shocked when their assembly week was done.
The Churchwide Assembly ended on a Saturday…my plane didn’t leave until the next day, so Synod Deacon Peggy Aiello and I hit the streets – well the French Quarter really….it turned out it was ‘Red Dress Run Day’ in New Orleans: men AND women dressed in Red Dresses (mind you it was for a charity of some kind) – so the streets were FULL….and as Peggy and I were strolling along, we happened to see Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton getting in line for one of the restaurants…and we looked at each other…actually said the words “I bet she is too tired and too sick of people” – but…did that stop us? No! Over to her we went and asked for a selfie. I mean, for sure she couldn’t know who we were or even which Synod we were from .. how much trouble could we get into? But you know what? Bishop Eaton was so gracious and OK with it! And our selfie is proof!
